No consumer scan can guarantee that a space is free of surveillance devices. YourSweep supports a room check; combine app results with visual inspection and appropriate help when something seems wrong.
A few simple steps when you arrive can help your family feel more prepared in an unfamiliar hotel room. Check that the door closes and latches as expected, learn how to use the room’s secondary lock, and keep key cards secure. These habits complement—not replace—the hotel’s own security measures.
After entering, make sure the door closes fully and that the deadbolt, privacy latch, or chain works as intended. Keep children away from the door and agree on what they should do if someone knocks. If a lock is damaged or does not work, contact the front desk and ask for assistance or another room.
This is also why a second physical locking device can matter. Researchers who disclosed the Unsaflok vulnerability reported that certain dormakaba Saflok electronic locks could be opened with forged cards; they note that the deadbolt on those affected locks could be retracted electronically and recommend a separate physical device, such as a hotel chain, as an additional deterrent. [10] This is a finding about the specific vulnerability and affected lock systems—not evidence that every hotel lock is insecure.
On compatible Android phones and compatible locks, YourSweep’s NFC feature checks an RFID reader for active key-card results and distinguishes a single-card result from a multiple-card result. It can give a guest a reason to ask the property for help. Compatibility depends on the phone and lock technology, and many hotel systems cannot be scanned. [11]
A scan is not a certification that a lock has been patched or that a room is secure. The Unsaflok researchers specifically say it is not possible to tell visually whether an affected Saflok lock has been updated. [10] If you have a question about the lock or an unexpected scan result, speak with hotel staff rather than trying to test or alter the lock yourself.
Check the door, locate the secondary latch, and keep your key cards with you. If YourSweep is compatible with your phone and the hotel’s lock, you can use its NFC key-card check as an optional extra. For a broader arrival routine, YourSweep also offers checks for visual camera patterns, nearby tracker signals, and devices visible on the Wi-Fi network you joined. None of those checks guarantees a room is free from security concerns.
